We firmly believe that every breeder should use the tools that science has laid before them to improve their beloved breed's genetic health through testing, research and knowledge--and be willing to do everything possible to ensure the health and well being of every puppy produced from their dogs, not just while they are puppies, but through adulthood.
Our dogs are completely part of our family, and live along side us in our home. We are a small hobby kennel, and typically breed 1-2 litters a year. All of our dogs are health tested prior to breeding, and results are available upon request.
Excellent Health, Sound Temperament, and Correct Conformation are the 3 fundamental principles in our breeding philosophy. There are MANY health issues that can affect the Standard Poodle. We use every tool that science has developed to guarantee the best possible health in our dogs. We advocate DNA screenings, as well as routine screenings such as blood work and CERF examines.
Dogs are CARNIVORES and they are meant to eat MEAT! The intestinal tract on a dog is far shorter than that of an herbivore or a omnivore. It is a myth that wild wolves eat the stomach contents of their prey.
What does this mean for our pets?
It basically means that dogs are unable to digest starches and carbohydrates properly. In other words, grains, fruits and vegetables are not digested or utilized by the dog when eaten.
Can they eat these things? Yes, but honestly, you are wasting your money by feeding these foods to your dog. There are also many breeders, vets, and scientists who believe that when these foods are in the digestive tract, because they cannot be broken down property, they can cause a gas build up, and can cause a deadly and potentially fatal condition known as "Bloat" and "Torsion", where gas fills up in the stomach, which can twist and block the blood flow. The Standard Poodle is one of the most affect breeds for this condition.
So does that mean we condemn all dry kibbles? No! The dog food market has come leaps and bounds in the last 5 years, and has responded by introducing some fabulous Grain Free Kibbles to the commercial market. A lot of these foods are now available at Large chain pet food stores such as PetSmart and Petco, and a lot of the Tack and Feed Stores carry a wider selection of the premium foods. While we personally believe that Raw Meats are ideal, we also understand that this particular diet is not always feasible for every owner, and so we can strongly recommend a high grade, GRAIN FREE kibble.
We also feed and strongly encourage minimal vaccinations. A lot fo Veterinary clinics have a strong disagreement to this principle. Because there has been a lot of contraversy in this issue, Dr Jean Dodds, DMV, has began to offer antibody titers for dogs and cats.
